Most of us rather like our cats to have a streak of wickedness. I should not feel quite easy in the company of any cat that walked about the house with a saintly expression.

On September 10, 2017, Hurricane Irma made landfall on Cudjoe Key in the lower Florida Keys as a Category 4 hurricane. One hundred forty-nine miles to the north, I was in lockdown with my mom and my partner in Memorial Hospital Miramar, where my partner had been admitted after throwing her back out while helping me put up our storm shutters. My then ninety-year-old mom and I were allowed to spend the night in the hospital with her instead of going home to ride out the storm.

In the hospital's lobby, seventy-five pregnant women and their families camped on inflatable beds. The pressure of a hurricane can induce labor. The hospital officials were taking no chances that the women would go into labor at home with no emergency vehicles able to get to them. (Keep reading)
