Also: Mass. voters hope for unity after the election; the wait for more election results
November 5, 2020 |
Good Morning Boston, 🌞 Sunny, with a high near 64. We're in for another day of wishing, waiting and hoping for more election results. Here's what you need to know: - Last night, the AP called Michigan for Biden, bringing his electoral count to 264, per the AP. That means Biden is six electoral votes – the equivalent of Nevada – away from winning this race. President Trump is currently at 214 and would need a sweep of the last four states to secure a victory. You can follow our live results map here (we automatically update it every 30 seconds), but when we know who has reached the magic winning number of 270 electoral votes, we'll let you know in an email alert ASAP. - As the vote counting process continues, Trump and his campaign officials have some major (baseless) concerns about the counting of mail-in votes in the Midwest and southeast. He's asking for a recount in Wisconsin and has filed lawsuits in competitive states like Arizona and Georgia in hopes to declare legal votes that were being counted after the polls had closed invalid. - Let's zoom in a little: Sec. of State William Galvin has been a proponent of mail-in ballots and counting every vote in Massachusetts from the start. Yesterday, he called President Trump's claims about mail-in ballots "deceitful." He thinks vote-by-mail was a huge success for Massachusetts and wants to make the process permanent here. - And in Boston, several hundred people gathered for two post-election rallies yesterday to support the counting of all votes nationwide. U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, fresh off his own win, appeared at the event. - ICYMI: We were still waiting on a few local races and calls as of yesterday morning. Here's what's happened. Voters officially rejected Question 2, which proposed using ranked-choice voting in Massachusetts, according to the AP. And in Maine, Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins clinched her fifth term. - While all eyes were on the election, the pandemic reared its ugly head again. Massachusetts reported more than 1,600 new positive cases of the coronavirus yesterday. It's the highest single-day total since mid-May. The seven-day hospitalization average is also up to 437 patients – a number that has been rising for the past two-and-a-half weeks. P.S.– Here's a quick reminder: The state's new restrictions to combat this recent rise in coronavirus cases starts at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow morning. This includes a stricter mask requirement, a 9:30 p.m. end time for most indoor activities and businesses, a stay-at-home advisory, and smaller gathering sizes.
