Monday, 15 February International Childhood Cancer Day A suite of tools to help countries improve diagnosis and treatment of cancer among children will be released by WHO on International Childhood Cancer Day, 15 February. The package includes a “how-to” guide for policy-makers, cancer control programme managers and hospital managers; an assessment tool to inform implementation; and a multilingual online portal for information-sharing. The new tools will support countries with implementation of the CureAll approach, adopted by WHO’s Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer. The Initiative, launched in 2018, aims to achieve at least 60% survival for childhood cancer globally by 2030. Currently, children living in high-income countries have an 80% chance of cure, while less than 30% of children diagnosed with cancer in many low- and middle-income countries survive. Tuesday, 16 February In 2018 alone, over 3.5 million hectares of land were harvested for tobacco. Tobacco growing is destroying our environment and threatening our health. As regulations tighten in middle- and high- income countries, tobacco companies are increasingly targeting African countries to scale-up tobacco leaf production. In Africa, tobacco crop yields increased by 10% from 2012 to 2018. Its impact is felt far beyond the 8 million people it kills with disease every year it also threatens the Earth’s resources, contributes to poverty, and exposes tobacco farmers to health risks. Farmers are often trapped in arrangements that lead to a vicious circle of debt, unable to get a fair price for their product. On top of that children from poor households miss school to be employed in tobacco farming to boost the family income. A new report will launch Tuesday, and be available in English, French and Portuguese. Thursday, 18 February WHO launches the first digital health ‘SMART Guidelines’ SMART Guidelines support countries to integrate WHO global data and health recommendations into digital systems accurately and consistently. This new approach to global health in the digital age begins with maternal health and the launch of the WHO SMART Antenatal Care Guidelines.
