Acting FTC Chairwoman Releases 2020 Annual Highlights Acting Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Rebecca Kelly Slaughter released the Commission's 2020 Annual Highlights today, emphasizing the agency's ongoing efforts to protect consumers and promote competition. "Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the FTC remained dedicated to protecting consumers and promoting competition," Slaughter said. "The FTC acted quickly to take down a number of illegal COVID-related scams, sued to block or unwind an unprecedented number of mergers, and took a number of other strong enforcement actions across its missions." 20/20 vision: Highlights of the year While everything about the past year has felt strange and new — I just can't say unprecedented another time — we could see one thing coming: scammers seized any opportunity to take advantage of the confusion and heightened emotion surrounding COVID-19. So, the FTC sprang into action, suing companies that made deceptive claims and did not correct them, making sure that deceptive claims for hundreds of products were quickly removed, sending hundreds of warning letters, and creating a dedicated site to share information as quickly as possible. In hindsight: 2020 This time last year, we all were adjusting to a new normal. As the pandemic took hold, the FTC kicked into high gear on COVID-19-related issues, while continuing its work on other fronts, too. The just-announced 2020 Annual Highlights reflect important enforcement actions, policy initiatives, and outreach efforts undertaken in the past year. |
