Good afternoon. Freight rail companies and unions reached a tentative agreement to avert a labor strike that was likely to hurt businesses, farmers and consumers by delaying the movement of critical goods, with the Biden administration taking an active role in the talks. Amtrak was scrambling to restart passenger service it had canceled on Wednesday.

The agreement included a significant pay increase for the workers. But a key issue was schedules, which workers say are punishing, upending their personal lives and driving colleagues from the industry. The deal heads to union members for a ratification vote, a standard procedure in labor talks that could take a few weeks.
