Searching for Wild Animals, Across the World

Our Voyages Issue.
Photograph by Gareth McConnell for The New York Times.

This year, for our Voyages Issue celebrating travel, we sent six photographers around the world in search of animal encounters. They came back with stories that ranged from nursing injured bears to watching red-eyed caimans emerge from swamps at night, and the photographs from each story attempt to answer a question: We may have pushed animals away to build the human world, but does a part of us still yearn for our ancient, strange familiarity that once existed alongside beasts?
