Travel Dispatch: The Joys of Fall Travel

Plus, a technique to help you slow down and enjoy your surroundings.

Dear Travel Fan,

Fall is here and with it, the fall travel season, which is perhaps a bit quieter than summer, but with joys all its own.

In Vienna, it means heading to the hills above the city, where wine taverns known as heurigen and buschenschanken combine beautiful hikes with food and drink. And in Istanbul, it's a perfect time to visit a kasir, pavilions and summer palaces created for the Sultans, that offer snapshots of a particular moment in history and an intimate and enticing slice of Ottoman life.

When traveling, it's important to slow down and give yourself time to take in your new surroundings. One idea is a technique called field sketching that's equal parts art and science, and that has you draw what you see. We sent a writer to take a field-sketching class in Alaska, and she shared her lessons with us.

The big news this week was the announcement from Japan's prime minister, Fumio Kishida, that his country would ease the strict controls on foreign visitors imposed because of the pandemic. We'll have more on that front soon!

Wishing you safe and happy journeys,

Amy Virshup
