I have long been a runner, but my first husband was not. He didn't like the idea of me running alone because our neighborhood was not entirely safe. He suggested we get a big dog who could run with me.

At a local animal shelter, we adopted a German Shepherd/Labrador mix named Bouncer. He was medium-sized but he was still young and he had huge paws. Sure enough, he soon grew to eighty-five pounds.

He was a sweetie, and he made a good running companion — except for pulling me with him whenever he'd chase after a squirrel or another dog, which happened every time he saw one. He also loved to jump on every person who entered our house. (Keep reading)
