He is the God of frolic. ~Henry Ward, The Most Famous Man in America The look on my new neighbor's face quickly turned from elated to horrified as my children ran out of the house to meet her. I had just been telling Sandy about my children, Emma and Tucker. Emma, age seven, was to start second grade in the fall. Tucker, age four, was to enter preschool. Sandy, in turn, was telling me about her four children: Jane, nine; Joe, six; Christopher, three; and Kim, eighteen months. She seemed so pleased to have kids move into the neighborhood. That was, until the door flung open and out ran Emma, Tucker and... Sam. Sam was our six-year-old Labrador Retriever. He was a gorgeous, shiny black dog with a white stripe down his chest. He had soft brown eyes and a tail that wagged so hard it caused a slight breeze if you stood nearby. We had taken him in three years earlier as a foster, but he quickly became my third child and surrogate nanny to the kids. He had a sweet disposition and a playful demeanor.
