For nearly 15 hours, Olli Hoare leaned his head against an airplane window and pondered his future. It was the summer of 2016, and Hoare was flying to the U.S. with his mother, Kate, from Sydney, Australia. |
Hoare had a track and field scholarship waiting for him at the University of Wisconsin, but the fear of the unknown was beginning to overwhelm him: Was it the right move? Did he want to spend the next four years so far from home? How would he manage on his own? Did he need a credit card? It was all too much. |
During their layover in Dallas, Hoare informed his mother that he had changed his mind: He wanted to bail and head home to Australia. His mother urged him to weigh his decision. |
"Think about the type of person you are," she told him. "Are you going to turn away from this opportunity? Are you going to go home and think about what could have been? I'm not going to get in your way. I'm going to get a coffee." |
Hoare, 26, who has since emerged as one of the top milers in the world, sometimes reflects on that conversation. His mother knew what she was doing. |
"I knew I would've hated myself if I didn't at least try," he said. |
In the years since, Hoare has embraced all the hard stuff — the hard training, the hard races, and even the hard work of growing the sport by spreading the gospel of middle-distance running. |
"If I can go home and inspire some kids to get excited about track and field, I feel like I should step into that responsibility," said Hoare, who lives and trains in Boulder, Colo., with the On Athletics Club. |

The 115th Millrose Games are one of the larger indoor meets of the season, attracting professional, collegiate and high school athletes Saturday. Expect a mix of strategic races and fast times. |
Two hours of the event will be broadcast between 4-6 p.m. Eastern on NBC. Here are the top races to watch. |
Women's 60 meters: 4:18 p.m. |
On Jan. 28, Aleia Hobbs won the 60 meters on her way to setting a new personal best and a new world leading time of 6.98 seconds. She followed that up with another win on Feb. 4, running 7.02 seconds. She's looking to add another win to her streak. She will have to contend with her teammate Mikiah Brisco, who finished second to Hobbs and both meets. |
Men's 60 meters: 4:23 p.m. |
Noah Lyles made a statement on Feb. 4 when he out leaned Trayvon Bromell by .002 to win the 60 meters in 6.507 seconds, a new personal best. Bromell finished in 6.509 seconds. Lyles is eager to lower that time even more, and he may do so Saturday in another major showdown, this time with Christian Coleman. |
Women's 3,000 meters: 4:38 p.m. |
The defending champion, Alicia Monson, is back for another 3,000 meter title at the Armory. She will face Elise Cranny, the American record-holder for the indoor 5,000 meters. Keep an eye on Katelyn Tuohy of North Carolina State, too. Tuohy already set the all-time collegiate indoor mile record at the Armory this year. |
Olli Hoare (in case you missed the above) is looking to defend his 2022 Wanamaker Mile title, but he will first have to outrun his teammates Yared Nuguse and Mario Garcia Romo. The race is expected to be blazing fast, with runners looking to run below 3 minutes and 50 seconds. |
