One particular June, we assembled at my brother's cottage on Manitoulin Island, the world's largest freshwater island, nestled in Lake Huron. After a couple of days of laughing, crying, eating, drinking and communing by the campfire, we decided, for the first time ever, to take a walk. We hadn't walked a mile down the country road when three little kittens ran out from a crack in a dilapidated red barn to greet us, mewing all the way. After much oohing and ahhing, we looked around for the kittens' mom but quickly came to the conclusion that someone had abandoned these precious babies in a cardboard box that we found.
