Dear Travel Fan,

New Orleans is a city that is on many traveler's lists, whether they want to visit for the first time or make it a regular destination. Our 36 Hours column this week provides an itinerary filled with old favorites and new discoveries.

Because of air travel's contribution to climate change, some people have decided that they will no longer fly. We take a look at this "no-jet set," and how they reached that decision.

February is Black History Month, and to mark it we highlight eight sites around the country that have received grants from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. They range from Louis Armstrong's home in New York City to the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

In the Pacific Northwest, #vanlife meets #skibum in ski resort parking lots, which allow overnight camping. We test the scene at three mountains. We also have a report on what to expect if you're planning a trip in California soon, as some popular destinations either benefited from this winter's storms or faced devastation. And we take a food tour of Colombia's Caribbean region, with suggestions from the chef Leonor Espinosa, who has been globally recognized for her cooking.

And we've got the latest tech twist for travelers: New accounts (with apps, of course), that let you pay either in your home currency or the one of the country in which you are traveling, with an eye to saving fees and getting a better exchange rate. We explain how they work.

Wishing you safe and happy journeys,

Amy Virshup
