|  The Mothership From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Well That Was Funny By Caroline Kiberd Times when families laugh together are among the most precious times a family can have. ~Fred Rogers Ding! Ding! Ding! The sound of my mother's dinner bell rang out, calling me home. I plopped on my sled headfirst. I wanted just one more ride down the snowy hill. With the wind in my face, I whizzed to the bottom as the sun lowered. The forest flew by in a blur, and I landed in a snowbank with a thud. I wiped the snow from my eyes. I was alone. It was nearly dark. I heard a branch creak in the wind. Suddenly, I was afraid. The previous night, I'd watched a show about the legendary Bigfoot. It was the 1970s, an era when unsolved mystery programs were popular. Weekly episodes covered topics like the Bermuda Triangle, the Loch Ness Monster, or UFOs. I grew up in New England hearing stories of ghosts and accused witches. We lived in a region where the famous UFO sightings at Exeter occurred. Alien abductees Betty and Barney Hill were local legends. I grew up on scary stories and I knew they weren't real. Mostly. (Keep reading)  |
