My family always had the basics, but there was little money for much else beyond food and shelter. Everyone in our small town lived the same way, which is why I was pleasantly surprised when my mother came up with the money to purchase my fourth-grade class picture. Twenty-two students lined up in three rows and faced the camera with goofy smiles. My teacher, Mrs. Cornell, a fiery redhead, stood to the side. She kept strict rules, but I loved her as I did all my teachers. I clung to my one-and-only class picture like a new teddy bear. Ever so carefully, I wrote all my classmates' names on the back. I was the nerdy kid who loved school. Every subject engrossed me as I absorbed knowledge. Schoolwork was never a burden. Even when I was sick, I still wanted to go to school. (Keep reading) |
