It Gets Better From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Kindness Matters By Michelle Padula The words of kindness are more healing to a drooping heart than balm or honey. ~Sarah Fielding Sometimes, a kind word from a stranger during a stressful moment can mean the world to someone. When I was raising my daughter, there were many times when I could have used a hug or compassionate word when I was at my lowest point. My daughter Rachel had severe ADHD as a child and the most embarrassing and trying moments as her mother came when we were out in public. I would try to quickly get my shopping done while simultaneously trying my level best to avoid a meltdown when she was begging me for a toy or candy bar. All parents have been there — trying to remain calm while their child is having an epic tantrum. Shoppers stare or surreptitiously walk by the aisle believing that, surely, they are catching a murder in progress. The snickers, stares, and not-so-subtle comments, "If that were my child..." made me pray for the ground to open and swallow me whole. I would have done anything to escape.
