The doctor frowned as he told us he noticed a problem with Sam's optic nerve. It was pale in color, with other anomalies. He referred us to a pediatric eye specialist in Memphis. Sam was seen not only by the specialist but also by several residents, since it was a teaching facility. My husband Michael and I listened as the doctor reported grimly, "Sam has optic nerve atrophy, meaning the optic nerve is weakening or deteriorating.
