I recall when I first read Thoreau's Walden, I was captivated by his call to simplify our lives. "Simplicity! Simplicity! Simplicity!" he said. Nevertheless, I ignored his advice for forty years. During this time, I cluttered my life with possessions. But, one morning, an incident occurred that laid bare the wisdom of Thoreau's advice and changed my life for the better. It is January 13, 2008, a bright Sunday morning at my home in Shoreview, Minnesota. My challenge is to remove twelve inches of snow from my driveway before the NFL playoff game begins. It is not going well. In fact, I am on the verge of declaring war on my snow blower. Three times, I have tried to blow out my driveway. Three times, my snowblower runs just long enough to plug the auger with snow and stall. Each time, I wheel the machine back into the garage, unplug it, and tinker with the carburetor.
