I played school with my younger sisters from the time they were old enough to talk. I even tutored my mom when she went back to school to get her GED. I wrote in my high-school diary that I would be an elementary-school teacher and write books for kids someday. When I was in fifth grade, I won a schoolwide writing contest. An author had come to our school for a visit, and she called me up to claim my prize: an autographed copy of Can't Catch Me, I'm the Gingerbread Man. Up until that point, the bulk of my writing had been in my diaries. It was the first time I had viewed my writing as something that others could enjoy. (Keep reading) |
