There's no way around it — a ski trip is expensive. The average price of a single-day lift ticket at a destination ski resort in the United States is $250 — and that's before you even think about accommodation, airfare or gear.

Still, there are ways find great powder that won't hurt your wallet as much. Lift tickets, lessons and guides are generally cheaper at the 4,000 or so ski resorts in Europe. The sub-$100 lift ticket is still within reach in no-frills ski fields from Utah to Vermont. Even Juneau, Alaska, is a bargain-season wonderland for fans of downhill and cross-country skiing when conditions are right.
