Happy bonus weekend! Labor Day's running late this year, so we get to squeeze a little more out of summer. You’ll find most of the Taste of Home team somewhere near water. If you're in the same boat (heh heh) and hosting a pool party or beach picnic soon, here are our resident water babies’ best tips.
Prep the main dish before you leave home. Catherine Ward, our Prep Kitchen Manager, loves to host at her family’s lake house. "Everyone loves our huli huli chicken, which is easy to prep and freeze at home, then grill at the lake."
Make the food part of the fun. When Christine Rukavena, Deputy Editor, Books, has pool parties, cooking is a group activity: "Personal pizzas on the grill are great for all ages! Parbake individual crusts the day before, then let your crew go nuts with toppings."
Leave the glassware on land. Digital editor and pontoon enthusiast Lauren Pahmeier keeps a stash of Yetis at her family’s cabin so nobody brings breakables on the boat. "After a long day on the water, we make a big batch of brandy slush to drink while we play cards."
Hydrate! "Bring wet wipes to nix sand, and more water than you think you'll need," says Rachel Vigoda, Senior Deputy Editor, Digital, who lives in a beach town. An infused water like pineapple-mint or blackberry-sage will keep everyone sipping.
I’m off to my friend Meagan's get-together at our local water park. What’s your go-to pool party recipe? Email me—I always write back.
After spending all day in the sun and surf, unwind with some of these easy summer recipes. These mains, sides, snacks and desserts are full of fresh ingredients and come together in a snap, making them perfect for lakeside livin’.
Pack up easy-to-eat beach picnic recipes, including snacks, sandwiches and pasta salads. Everything can be made in advance, will travel in your cooler and can be eaten cold or at room temp. Surf’s up!
