Big news: Taste of Home's Holiday newsletter is becoming Get Together! I'm Ellie, head of editorial here, and I'll be writing to you every week from now on.
Why the change? Food memories happen every day, not just on holidays, and they can be just as joyful. Mine include an impromptu mussel party on my friend Candace's rooftop patio, juicy strawberries straight from my dad's garden eaten over the sink, and my son begging to invite Grandma on Korean taco night because they're too good not to share. So we're expanding this newsletter to celebrate the community we find at our table (or kitchen sink, or picnic blanket) no matter what day it is.
Each week, I'll share a reason to gather your people—sometimes one that's already on your calendar, sometimes something surprising, like "it's finally chili weather"—plus the easy recipes and simple logistics to pull it off. And yes, when holiday seasons hit, I'll send daily countdowns as usual, so you'll still get that head start on Thanksgiving and Christmas cookie planning you've come to count on.
It's been a minute since our last official American holiday. We're in this long, languid stretch that lets us slow down to savor the last drops of summer before our routines kick in again. This is the perfect excuse to round up a few folks to celebrate each other (and some really good food). If you're someone who needs a theme [raises hand], here are a few ideas to get you started.
Toast your friends at an Italian Aperitivo Hour. Clink glasses of Aperol spritz and set out easy store-bought snacks like salty Marcona almonds and mixed olives.
After dark, toss some blankets on the lawn, whip up some star-shaped snacks and have a stargazing party. (The Perseids peak overnight on August 12-13.)
If zucchini is coming out of your ears, too, invite neighbors for a cheeky Gad-Zukes four-course meal by mixing and matching these recipes. Give away more as favors.
How are you celebrating right now? Who's at your table and what are you eating together? Email me at ellie.martincliffe@tmbi.com. I always write back!
